Vintage Guitar - November '99

The last three records featuring the former guitarist for Rod Stewart and Billy Squire have been done under the name Avenue Blue. They've featured some of my favorite music in recent years...a potent blend of jazz, funk, soul and everything in-between. On this effort, Golub joins with the likes of drummer Steve Ferrone, bassist Tony Levin and keyboardist Philippe Saisse to create another stew that should keep the smooth jazz radio stations asking for more.
One of the things I love about Golub's playing is the soulfulness. It starts right away on cut one with the major league funk of "Wanna Funk?" His tasteful-yet-nasty solos wind through all sorts of key changes and modulations to create a playful, soulful tune. If you like things a little softer, "Indiana Moon" offers soaring sustaining notes over some beautiful changes. His version of the Dizzy Gillespie classic, "Manteca," is just gorgeous. The Latin tinged piece allows plenty of room for Golub on guitar and Rick Braun on trumpet to solo through changes like soulful knives through butter.
By the time we get to "Groanin' ", a take on the Bobby Timmons classic, "Moanin' ", Golub has shown over and over what a fine player he is, with more-than-tasteful sensibilities and soulful chops. Yet another fine album from a fine player. - JH
