Naked City - 1996

naked city

Jeff and his band, Avenue Blue are back with their second Bluemoon recording, naked city, revisiting the soul, funk and blues stylings that peppered his acclaimed debut. Adding their talents to the project are guests Bob James and Phoebe Snow, plus a new band of New York musicians.' naked city' features thirteen tracks.....ten Golub - penned originals, plus remakes of such pop classics as "Baby I'm Yours," "Spooky," and "Wildflower." The goal of the new album was to capture the mood and spontaneity of a live club date. For naked city, Jeff and co-producer Rick Braun went into the studio with a full rhythm section and more. Only the horns and a few keyboard and percussion parts were overdubbed. A lot of the tracks were recorded on the first or second take. naked city juxtaposes fluid warmth and cool textures to create moods and atmospheres that both soothe and surprise !

Reviews.....

'naked city' has re-entered the R & R charts moving up to #7. (9/15/96)

What a way for Bluemoon to start the year off. "funky is as funky does" sucks you in from the first exciting note and leaves one breathless like a holiday shopping spree. "nitpickin' ", an uptempo song, is a wonderful stress-reliever after a hectic day of planning another damn conference! For those programmers looking for some lyrics, Phoebe Snow won't disappoint your listeners with her emotional rendition of "baby i'm yours." Pour a cup of cappuccino and enjoy "the conversation" Bob James and Avenue Blue are having. Personal faves: The smooth "wildflowers" and the energetic 'tumblin'." Jeff Golub and Rick Braun's production left no spot uncovered. Tell those lazy retail clerks to get ready!....(Kandace Taylor) - HITS Magazine Review : Premiere Pick
.....

Jeff Golub was happily playing lead guitar with Rod Stewart and doing sessions in New York when the solo bug bit him in 1994. The result was Avenue Blue, a solo guitar debut that did very well with commercial smooth jazz stations. His follow-up is called Naked City, and the grooves are as economic as the previous record, but this time Golub steps up the funk a little more. The mid-tempo title song will draw early airplay attention, but spirited tunes like "Nitpickin'" and "Funky Is As Funky Does" will draw clean comparisons to Booker T. & the MGs in the feelin' good department. Rick Braun returns to co-produce and sit in, while Golub explores his soul and jazz-rock influences. Pianist Bob James jams on the breezy "Conversation," and Phoebe Snow sings on the standard, "Baby I'm Yours"......(Keith Zimmerman) GAVIN
